바이올리니스트 이경선은 연주자로서 또한 교육자로서 세계 무대에서 왕성하게 활동하고 있는 정상급 아티스트이다.
1991년 한국인 최초로 워싱턴 국제 콩쿠르 1위를 수상했고, 같은 해 몬트리올 국제 콩쿠르, 레오폴트 모차르트 국제 콩쿠르(1992년), 퀸 엘리자베스 국제 콩쿠르(1993년), 차이콥스키 국제 콩쿠르(1994년) 등 최고 권위의 콩쿠르에서 연속으로 입상하며 세계 무대에서 실력을 인정 받았다.
미국 말보로 뮤직 페스티벌, 아스펜 뮤직 페스티벌, 시애틀 챔버뮤직 페스티벌, 시카고 라비니아 뮤직 페스티벌, 영국 프러시아 코브 뮤직 페스티벌, 프랑스 쿠슈벨, 대관령국제음악제, 서울스프링페스티벌 등에 초청되어 왔다. 또한 세종솔로이스츠와 금호 현악4중주단 멤버로서 전 세계에 ‘문화한국’의 이미지를 제고한 공로로 대통령 표창을 수상했고 ‘대한민국 문화홍보대사’로 위촉되기도 했다.
어린 시절 어려운 음악 교육 환경에서도 불구하고 이화콩쿠르 중등부 1등을 차지했고, 서울예고 재학 시절엔 동아콩쿠르, 서울대 재학 시절엔 해외파견콩쿠르, 부산콩쿠르, 난파콩쿠르 등 많은 콩쿠르에서 입상했다.
서울대에서 김남윤 교수를, 피바디 콘서바토리에서 실비아 로젠버그 교수를 사사했고, 이곳에서 아티스트 디플로마와 석사학위를 수여했다. 그 후 줄리어드 음악대학에서 로버트 만, 도로시 딜레이 등 세계적인 명 교수들을 사사하며 전문연주자 과정을 마쳤다.
바이올리니스트 이경선은 많은 언론 매체와 평론가들로부터도 높은 평가를 받아왔다. 뉴욕 콘서트 리뷰의 해리스 골드스미스는 “탁월한 색조의 강렬함과 표현력으로 연주된 고다르의 ‘콘체르토 로만티크’를 그녀만큼 독창적으로 연주한 이는 없었을 것”이라 호평했고, 터스컬루사 뉴스는 “유동성과 우아함, 페이소스 및 감정처리 등에서 이 오케스트라와 함께 연주해온 음악 중 가장 지적인 솔리스트”로 평가했다. 스트라드의 데니스 루니는 “선명도, 투명감 그리고 세련된 기술력으로 모든 어려움을 극복한 그녀는 비외탕의 ‘바이올린 협주곡 제5번’의 특별한 낭만주의를 최고의 경지로 올려놓았다”며 극찬했다.
2001년부터 미국 오벌린 음악대학, 2006년부터 휴스턴 음악대학 교수로 재직했고, 2009년에는 서울대학교 음악대학에 교수로 부임하며 현재까지 많은 전문 연주자들을 길러내고 있다.
또한 미국의 콜번, 신시내티, 샌프란시스코 노스캐롤라이나, 인디애나, 미시간 그리고 프랑스 스트라스부르 음악대학 등에서 저명교수로 초청되어 강의와 연주를 해오고 있다. 하노버 국제콩쿠르, 서울국제콩쿠르, 윤이상국제콩쿠르, 러시아 시베리아 국제 콩쿠르, 스위스 시옹 주니어 국제콩쿨 등의 심사위원을 역임했고, 창원국제실내악축제와 서울비르투오지그룹 음악감독으로서도 활발히 활동하고 있다.
이경선은 현재 1723년산 조셉 과르네리우스를 사용하고 있다.
Kyung Sun Lee, VIOLIN
Violinist Kyung Sun Lee captured sixth prize in the 1994 Tchaikowsky Competition, a bronze medal in the 1993 Queen Elizabeth Competition, first prizes of the Washington and D’Angelo International Competitions, and third prize in the Montreal International Competition, where she also won the Audience Favorite and the Best Performance of the Commissioned Work prizes. Subsequent to winning these awards she has enjoyed ever-increasing popularity as a performer.
She has received high critical acclaim: “Exceptional tonal suavity and expressive intensity in equal measure,” commented The Strad. “Godard’s ‘Concerto Romantique’ could not have had a more outstanding soloist than Kyung Sun Lee,” proclaimed Harris Goldsmith in the New York Concert Review. “Fluidity and grace; pathos and emotion,” raved the Palm Beach Post. “Lee is the most musical, the most intelligent soloist to have played with the orchestra in quite a while,” maintained the Tuscaloosa News. “Penetrating clarity, a strong sense of style and a technical supremacy that conquered all difficulties with unruffled ease,” announced the Miami Herald. “Beyond superb execution, she conveyed [Vieuxtemps’s Concerto no. 5]’s particular Romanticism expertly,” remarked Dennis Rooney in The Strad.
For years a highly sought after teacher in Seoul, Lee became Assistant Professor of Violin at the Oberlin Conservatory in the fall of 2001, and then Associate Professor of Violin at University of Houston in the fall of 2006.
She has taught the last two summers at the Aspen Music Festival, and has also been involved with the Seattle and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festivals, the Euro Music Festival Leipzig, as well as numerous festivals in Korea. Lee is a former member of the acclaimed KumHo/Asiana String Quartet of Korea, with whom she performed worldwide.
In addition to her busy international performing career, in recent years she has been in some demand as a judge of violin competitions.
Kyung Sun Lee studied at Seoul National University, Peabody Conservatory and The Juilliard School. Her teachers have included Nam Yun Kim, Sylvia Rosenberg, Robert Mann, Dorothy Delay and Hyo Kang.
